Originally a chartered Quantity Surveyor, David Richbell is one of the most experienced non-lawyer commercial mediators in the UK. Trained and accredited by CEDR and Harvard, he has been mediating since 1992. He became CEDR Director of Training in 1993, a full time post (1996 - 2001). He is now an independent mediator and also Founder Member of MATA (Mediation and Training Alternatives) which specialises in advanced mediator training. He also leads the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators mediator training programme.

Although around half of his mediations are civil/heavy engineering, construction and property disputes, he has also specialised in sports, motor industry and family business/partnership disputes with case values varying from £4,000 to £650 million.

Since leaving CEDR in 2001 he has trained mediators for INTA, TeCSA, CIArb and the Danish Bar. Under the MATA banner he runs a series of winter Debates, spring Master Classes and an international Advanced Mediator Training course every September.
